Bonus Room Update

After having RH adjust vents all over the place, not good:

Thermostat downstairs (we only have 1 with the 1 zone system), was set to 73 degrees.  I really want to see their Energy Star certification testing documents, I'm getting the impression that it was rubber-stamped and they didn't actually test anything.

Time to submit another ticket...

  1. So you have set your house to 73 degrees but your basement is not a a two degree difference?

Is that correct? Ours kinda stays a 2 to 3 degrees and our basement is unfinished...

    1. The basement is fine, our bonus room (bedroom) is on the second floor and for the most part above the garage.

  2. Brian, ah ok.....we are two zones the first floor and second floor always read the same, but again our bedroom is over the garage and never feels as warm even though it says what it should......We just did our 30 day and I asked our PMs if I could have snuck in more insulation and basically he wouldn't not have "noticed"....Damn!!!

    We shoulda done that huh???

Let us know what they do about it??

  3. Wow! I hope they do something. Have they said they would fix it? I wonder if you could contact someone from Energy Star if they don't...

  4. HI Brian,

We were able to see the energy star document and got a copy of it too. We didnt build the bonus room like you, but did question them on the one /two zoned heat. We also made sure that the furnace they installed had enought BTU to cover 3000 sq ft. Our gas and electric bills are so far really good and upstairs as well as downstairs are always the same temp that we set the thermostat to. I would check into it!!

    1. Did you guys end up with a two zone or one? If I recall we're in the same EPA climate zone, so any extra details on your HVAC setup (zones, tonnage(s) of units, BTU, etc.) as well as what was on that report would be greatly appreciated!

    2. The furnace is a temp star 80000 btu furnace..one zone. We have approx 2900 sq ft, no bonus, but elevation d which i think is the biggest elevation w/o a bonus room. We have the four foor extension off the family room. Its energy star rated 97% effecient. Ryan homes agreed to insulate the garage walls an extra four ft, which im not sure makes a difference. Therr were also markers in the attic to make sure there was enough insulation blown in. They had to come back twice to make sure the insulation was up to the lines....we also went up there and measured ..its suppose to 12 inches deep of insulation in the attic and is was low in many spots so they kept blowing more in which helped alot. We also made sure they insulated the basement from the ceiling to close to the floor. Im not sure if your basement is finished or not, ours is not. They said if we did finish it, we could of had two zones.
Our bills are great since its been so cold here..we have kept the heat on or near 70 degrees when we are home and around 60 when we work during the day. Our bills are right around 220/ month.

    3. We tried to look for the document, but may be buried with all of our other RH papers. We do recall they failed RH on a couple of minor things like placing caulk around some of the pipes that travled from upstairs to downstairs and they failed the insulation depth in the attic. If we can find it i will list out everything that is on there. Hope that helps..good luck

  5. We are having a similar problem with our daughters bedroom. The temp is always colder, especially at night. RH said the difference has to be less than 5 degrees for them to get energy star rating. They have the heating company coming out thursday to check the rooms. Im sure it's more than 5 degrees. Let me know what they do about yours. Curious how they did the first "fix".

  6. We were told to call the heating company because the front is cold and the back is hot and the basement waivers between the two temps.
